Why your HP laptop only works when plugged in
⚡ Fast fix
- Check the battery charge. If it's stuck at 0% or won't increase, the battery may not be charging.
- Try a power reset. This can clear temporary glitches affecting battery detection.
- Run HP Battery Check. A failed test can help confirm whether the battery needs replacing.
- Don't ignore a swollen battery. Stop using and charging the laptop if the case is bulging or the battery looks damaged.
Your HP® laptop works perfectly fine at your desk, but the second you unplug it, everything goes dark. So much for working from the coffeeshop.
At Asurion, we've seen this happen when a laptop battery stops holding a charge, Windows loses track of it, or something in the charging system fails. Here's how we'd figure out why your HP laptop only works when plugged in—and whether the battery actually needs replacing.
Why does your HP laptop shut off when unplugged?
If your HP laptop immediately turns off when you disconnect the charger, the battery probably isn't supplying enough power to keep it running. That could mean it's worn out, completely drained, disconnected internally, or no longer being recognized.
A useful clue is what Windows shows while the laptop is plugged in. If the battery percentage never increases, we'd check the charging system. If Windows says "No battery detected," we'd investigate the battery connection or driver before assuming it needs replacing.
How to fix an HP laptop that only works when plugged in
Before buying a new battery, we'd check whether the laptop can charge and recognize the one it already has.
1. Check the battery and charger
Keep the laptop plugged in and look at the battery icon in Windows. Is the percentage increasing, stuck at 0%, or showing a charging warning?
Make sure the charger is compatible with your HP model and connected securely. If the charging cable feels loose or keeps disconnecting, our guide to HP laptop charging port problems can help narrow down the issue.
If the battery shows 100% but the laptop still dies when unplugged, that's a stronger sign that it isn't delivering power properly.

2. Try a power reset
A power reset can clear temporary problems with how the laptop manages battery power.
- Shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect the charger and accessories.
- Remove the battery only if your HP model has a user-removable one.
- Hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery, if removed, and charger, then restart.
This won't erase your files. If the battery still isn't recognized, we'd test it next.
3. Run HP Battery Check
HP Battery Check is one of the quickest ways to find out whether the battery is failing.
- Shut down the laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
- Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Select Component Tests > Power > Battery, if available.
- Run the test and review the results.
A Replace or Failure result points toward a battery that needs service. If the tool reports No Battery, the problem could involve the battery or its internal connection.
Our guides to running HP hardware diagnostics and checking your HP laptop's battery health cover the testing options in more detail.
4. Check whether Windows recognizes the battery
If HP Battery Check passes but Windows still shows a battery warning, we'd check the driver.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Batteries.
- Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, if listed.
- Select Uninstall device, then restart the laptop.
Windows should reinstall the driver automatically. If the battery still doesn't appear, see our guide to troubleshooting an HP laptop battery that's not detected.

FAQ
Why does my HP laptop turn off immediately when unplugged?
The battery may be worn out, disconnected, or unable to supply power. Run HP Battery Check to help identify whether it needs replacing.
Can I use my HP laptop without a working battery?
Some HP laptops can run directly from a compatible charger, but they'll shut down if power is interrupted. It's best to address the battery problem rather than rely on the charger indefinitely.
Why does my HP laptop say 100% charged but die when unplugged?
The battery may be reporting an incorrect charge level or may no longer deliver power properly. HP Battery Check can help identify a failing battery.
Will replacing my HP laptop battery fix the problem?
It may, especially if diagnostics confirm battery failure. But a damaged connector or charging circuit can cause similar symptoms, so we'd check those before replacing parts.
