Nest camera offline? Try these fixes
⚡Fast fix
- Check for power issues. Most offline camera issues stem from a drained battery or a loose power adapter.
- Reboot your router. Unplug your router or modem for about 30 seconds and plug it back in to clear temporary network glitches.
- Still offline? Update the Google Home® app to fix bugs that might be blocking your camera’s connection.
- Reset your Google Nest® camera. Unplug a wired Google Nest camera for 10 seconds, or hold the reset button for 5 seconds on a battery model.
A Google Nest camera lets you keep an eye on your home, so when it is offline, you can’t monitor the surroundings remotely. That means you’ll be fretting about what’s happening at home until you get your device back online. Fortunately, if your Nest camera is offline, there are usually simple fixes.
At Asurion, we have seen it all when it comes to smart home connectivity issues, such as a Google Nest doorbell not connecting to Wi-Fi®. Whether you are troubleshooting other smart cameras that drop offline or looking to keep a Nest camera secure from hackers, we’re here to help. Here’s what to do if your Google camera is offline.
Check the camera's power connection
If your Nest camera or Nest doorbell suddenly goes offline, the most probable culprit is a power issue. With inconsistent power, your camera can disconnect from your network and appear offline in the Google Home app.
For a wired camera, check that the power adapter is fully plugged into the camera and the outlet. If you have a battery-powered Nest camera, follow these steps to check its charge.
- Open the Google Home app.
- Select your Nest camera.
- Tap Settings > Battery (or Device information) to check the battery percentage.
- Charge the camera fully if the battery is below 10%, then check whether it reconnects on its own.
These steps work for both Nest cameras and Nest doorbells because the underlying hardware is similar.

Restart your Wi-Fi router
If your Nest camera or Google Nest doorbell is powered up but still offline, you may be experiencing a network-related issue. Restart your Wi-Fi router to clear temporary glitches that might disrupt Wi-Fi connections.
- Unplug your modem and router from the outlet.
- Wait for 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
- Give your camera 2–3 minutes to reconnect on its own.
A Nest camera requires a strong internet connection to transmit video, so confirm that it is within range of your router. If the camera is far and you can’t move it closer to your router, choosing a router with stronger range can improve coverage and maintain a stable connection.
Update or reinstall the Google Home app
If your Google camera or Nest doorbell is offline, but Wi-Fi is working on other devices, an outdated Google Home app can be the culprit. Try updating the Google Home app through the Google Play™ Store or Apple App Store®. If there’s an update, it may have a fix to resolve the connection issue for your Nest camera.
To check for updates on Android™, follow these steps.
- Go to the Google Play app.
- Select Search.
- Look for the Google Home app.
- Select Update.
On iPhone® or iPad®, use these steps to update the Google Home app.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Go to the Available Updates section. Look for the Google Home app in the list.
- Tap Update.
Still can’t get your camera back online? Delete the Google Home app and reinstall it.
Reset the camera and set it up again
If all else fails, consider a factory reset to get your Nest camera back online. A factory reset will erase your camera’s settings and saved footage, so back up anything you want to keep first.
- Locate the reset button on your camera.
- Press and hold the reset button until the status light turns solid yellow.
- Release the button.
- Open the Google Home app and tap Add device > New device.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to reconnect your camera to your Wi-Fi network.

FAQ
Why is my Google Nest camera offline?
Your Google Nest camera can be offline because of a loose power connection, a dead battery, Wi-Fi connection issues, or a temporary problem with the Google Home app. If you’re having similar connectivity issues with a Nest thermostat, follow the steps for fixing a Nest thermostat that’s showing offline.
Can a weak Wi-Fi signal cause a Nest camera to go offline even if other devices connect fine?
Yes, cameras stream video continuously, so they need a stronger, steadier signal than devices that just access the internet occasionally.
Does a Nest camera reset erase saved footage or settings?
Yes, a factory reset permanently deletes your camera’s video history and restores all settings to default. Only consider a camera reset as a last resort.
