How to make your Ring doorbell ring inside your house
Your Ring doorbell can ring outside but not inside because of incorrect settings in the Ring app. Follow these steps to get it to ring indoors.
Turn on Ring my In-home Chime settings
- In the Ring app, select the menu (☰) > Devices and choose your doorbell.
- Select Device Settings > In-home Chime Settings > Automatic Chime Detection.
- After the app detects your chime, switch on Ring my In-home Chime.
If your indoor chime still doesn’t ring, select My chime didn’t ring for the Ring app to try automatic setting adjustments.
Set your chime type manually
If the Ring app couldn’t automatically make your Ring doorbell ring inside your house, proceed as follows:
- Under In-home Chime Settings, tap Advanced Settings.
- Choose your Chime Type (Digital Type 1, Digital Type 2, Mechanical, or None).
- Select Ring my In-home Chime.
Try another Chime Type if you can hear your Ring doorbell ringing indoors.
Configure wired doorbell
For a wired doorbell, follow these configuration steps:
- Under In-home Chime Settings, select your Chime Type.
- Turn on Ring my In-home Chime.
- Select Save.
Adjust your Ring Chime volume
If you have a Ring Chime, Chime Plus, or Chime Pro, you can adjust the indoor volume in the Ring app.
- Select the menu (☰) > Devices.
- Choose your Chime.
- Tap Audio Settings > Chime Tones.
- Adjust the volume under Ring and Motion.
Turn off Chime Snooze
Ring Chime still not working? Check if Chime Snooze is enabled:
- Select the menu (☰) > Devices.
- Choose your Chime, Chime Pro, or Chime Plus.
- Go to Device Settings > Chime Snooze.
- If snooze is active, select Turn off Snooze.
How to fix a Ring Chime that's not working
If your Ring Chime is not working, try these Ring doorbell troubleshooting steps:
- Confirm your chime is plugged into a working outlet.
- Check that your wireless plug-in chime is online so it can communicate with your doorbell.
- Unplug your chime for 10 seconds, then plug it back in to clear temporary connection glitches.
- If all else fails, reset your Ring Chime to clear configuration and Wi-Fi signal issues. Using a paperclip, press and hold the pinhole reset button on the side for 15 seconds, then release.
- In the Ring app, reconnect your chime to the doorbell and test it.
Check the power and wiring on a hardwired doorbell
If your hardwired doorbell isn't ringing inside, examine the power and wiring. Before you proceed, turn off the power at the breaker and stop if you are unsure at any point.
- Remove the cover from your chime box.
- Look for loose or disconnected wires.
- Confirm that no wire blocks the striker, the small hammer inside a mechanical chime.
- Check that the Pro Power Kit (a small connector that stabilizes power) is installed if your model needs one.
- Find your doorbell transformer and verify that it’s compatible with your doorbell model.
When a chime kit or pro install is the real fix
If your doorbell is not working with Ring even after all the above fixes, you may need additional hardware or professional installation. Some signs you need more than DIY fixes include:
- Your chime is incompatible with your doorbell
- Wiring is damaged
- Transformer is underpowered
